Introducing... King No-One

Posted on June 10, 2014 at 12:50 AM Comments comments (0)

King No-One are the newest indie rock band on the market, born and bred in York, the quartet are already sending shock-waves across the industry. Due to their recent rise in popularity, they've been confirmed to play this years Humber Street Sesh in Hull once again after playing in last years event, the band have also already headlined gigs in Hull, such as the Fruit in September of last year and now know what to expect from the Hull crowd at this years Humber Street Sesh, and we expect them to go home a very happy bunch once seeing the rockers from York. Due to their recent rise of popularity we grabbed an interview with them:

1) Who are King No-One?

King No-One are a four piece Indie Rock band from York, all members being 19.

2) Are you looking forward to playing this years Humber Street Sesh?

Yes, we played last year and it was great fun. We love a good Hull crowd!

3) What can we expect from King No-One in the future?

Well, we're already on the fringes... We toured the UK with Embrace this May, got played on Sunday Brunch, headlined and sold out two dates in Leeds and York and played Leeds and Reading fest last August. We've also got a great festival circuit this year. So expect us to make our way into being a household name, a band people have heard of up and down the country, that's only near future...

4) Hull is home to some great gig venues such as the Früit, which you've already headlined in Septemberof last year, do you think you could be headlining gigs there again anytime soon?

We headlined the Fruit in September, it's a great venue. We will come back and do it again on a much bigger scale soon.

5) Where do you see yourselves in 5 years time?

In 5 Years time we'll be 24, no doubt we'll still be in this band. So in less than two years, we've got to where we are, add another 5... We see ourselves being very busy.

Big thanks to King No-One for the interview. If you've purchased a wristband for this years Humber Street Sesh we strongly advise you go see these lads. Hull are in for a treat...

Girls Like PINS - Interview With PINS

Posted on June 9, 2014 at 11:25 AM Comments comments (0)

We caught up with girl band PINS and grabbed ourselves an interview with them. PINS recently dropped their debut album 'Girls Like Us', which went down a huge hit. This was followed by a tour which followed the same trend. We at RIFFED are expecting PINS to become huge, so we got ourselves an interview before they became too famous:

1) Who are PINS?

Faith, Lois, Anna, Sophie

2) Can we be expecting another album soon?

Yeah, we have one out now called 'Girls Like Us' but yeah the next one is being demoed. I wrote a lot of the lyrics today.. its the first day I've had no plans, like, this year.. it's all coming together nicely, we don't want to rush anything you know, we're approaching it a little differently to how we did the first album.. we're enjoying experimenting. I think we have a release coming out before the second album anyway, it's all up in the air right now, it's exciting!

3) You've recently been touring, how's that gone?

Wild, we got back from Europe the other day, we did some dates with Crocodiles, I miss them already. Sometimes the bands we meet aren't how I imagine them to be, they're not fun or whatever, but, Crocodiles are the real deal.

4) Are you looking forward to the festival season?

Yeah, i'm not really a festival-goer as such but i like playing them, for sure! I think our next show is Best Kept Secret in the Netherlands, i can't wait.. our friends September Girls, Honeyblood and Lyla Foy are playing on the same day as us so it will be good to catch up with them, and i can't wait to see Nightbeats, i love their records but i've not seen them live yet.

5) What's it like being in PINS?

It's mostly a real mess but i love it, i can't remember what life was like before PINS.

Huge thanks to Faith of PINS for the interview. If you haven't yet checked PINS out, we suggest you get on it.

Albums To Look Forward To This Year

Posted on June 8, 2014 at 3:35 PM Comments comments (0)

There are many albums set to be released this year that we at RIFFED cannot wait for. From this huge number of forthcoming albums, we collated a list of the top 5.

5 Childhood - Lacuna

Indie rockers Childhood plan to release their debut album 'Lacuna' on the 12th of August this year. Previous releases such as Solemen Skies and Falls Away provide solid evidence that Lacuna will be a storming debut album from the London lads.

4 Jaws - Be Slowly

Brum boys Jaws have announced debut album 'Be Slowly' will be released this September and we expect this to be huge. As EP's such as Milkshake are anything to go by, Be Slowly will be one heck of an album.

3 The Courteeners - TBC

News has become apparent Liam Fray and the lads are planning to release a new album in August. Not much else has yet been said but this news has certainly got us at RIFFED extremely excited.

2 Spector - TBC

Fred, Jed, Tom and Danny plan to follow up their debut album 'Enjoy It While It Lasts' this year with a new album and we seriously cannot wait. Well they're making us wait a while aren't they... But we expect this new album to top their first as singles such as Decade of Decay and Reeparbahn are sounding fantastic.

1 Royal Blood - TBC

Brighton rockers Royal Blood are set to release their debut album and we qoute 'around August time'. We are huge fans of Mike and Ben and expect this to be a contender for album of the year. It's bound to be huge.

We hope we've gotten you as excited as we are for these forthcoming releases. It's set to be a huge year for albums. Enjoy.

Kasabian '48:13' Review

Posted on June 7, 2014 at 6:05 PM Comments comments (0)

RIFFED received their copy of Kasabian's new album '48:13' early. So, due to this, we thought we'd review it for you.

Track listing :

1 (Shiva)

2 Bumblebee

3 Stevie

4 (Mortis)

5 Doomsday

6 Treat

7 Glass

8 Explodes

9 (Levitation)

10 Clouds

11 Ee-zeh

12 Bow

13 S.P.S

On the whole, '48:13' doesn't let down. Kasabian have reached the heights of which they've hyped their new album up to. When the first single 'Ee-zeh' was released a few weeks back, many were expecting '48:13' to be a flop. But after the weeks have passed, Ee-zeh has grown on many people, although it may have been different to their usual style, many have warmed to it. Ee-zeh being one of the highlights of the album, a huge tune, a bold statement from Kasabian implying they are still that band from Leicester we all know and love. Stevie, Bumblebee, Glass, Bow, Treat, Doomsday, Clouds, S.P.S and Explodes are all highlights too. Pretty much implying how fantastic '48:13' truly is. Bumblebee and Stevie alongside Ee-zeh really are the pick of the bunch, proper Kasabian tunes. Huge noise. That rawness that we all love. Bumblebee may just be a racket, but it is one that is fantastically engineered, a brilliant tune. Whereas Stevie has that catchy chorus that when you hear, will instantly spring to mind. Another outstanding tune. '48:13' really has not let down. A huge album from Kasabian. We award it a 9/10. The Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury awaits.

Purchase '48:13' in stores from Monday 9/06/14

Arcade Fire, Earls Court, 07/06/14 - Review

Posted on June 7, 2014 at 5:35 PM Comments comments (0)

Arcade Fire brought their worldwide Reflektor tour to London this week. They played two nights at the legendary Earl's Court, Friday the 6th of June and Saturday the 7th ahead of their headline slot at Glastonbury later this month aswell as playing British Summer Time at Hyde Park in July. Unfortunately RIFFED weren't able to make Earl's Court for the gig, but Xfm was on hand to broadcast it live from London, meaning we could review it for you.

The setlist :

01 Reflektor

02 Flashbulb Eyes

03 Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)

04 Rebellion (Lies)

05 Joan of Arc

06 Month of May

07 We Exist

08 The Suburbs

09 The Suburbs (Continued)

10 Ready to Start

11 Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)

12 Intervention

13 No Cars Go

14 Haiti

15 Afterlife

16 It's Never Over (Oh Orpheus)

17 Sprawl ii

18 Normal Person

19 London (The Smiths cover)

20 Here Comes the Night Time

21 Wake Up

The setlist, slightly different to that of the previous night but not one to be frowned upon. Arcade stormed onto the scene with a fantastic version of Reflektor, supplying that unmatchable live atmposphere the Canadians create at every gig they play, followed fantastically by Flasbulb Eyes. As Arcade continued to amaze all at Earl's Court, there were beautiful renditions of Neighbourhood #3 (Power Out), Rebellion (Lies), Joan of Arc and a surprise with the play of Month of May. We Exist and The Suburbs sounded impeccible, We Exist being the new single release from Reflektor and old classic The Suburbs pleasing many fans. Ready to Start, Neighbourhood #1 (Tunnels), Intervention, another surprise with the playing of Intervention, No Cars Go and Haiti, all was a treat to listen to, an absolutley outstanding performance of No Cars Go it is has to be said. Arcade begin to close their set with Afterlife, which sounded just like a studio version, faultless. It's Never Over (Oh Orpheus) and Sprawl ii followed in spectacular fashion, Normal Person was next, a huge tune from Arcade and it was no surprise that it also went down a hit. Arcade threw many surprises into their set at Earl's Court and maybe one of the biggest being the cover of The Smiths with London, but we wouldn't call it a cover. They owned it. Arcade closed their emphatic set with Here Comes The Night Time and Wake Up, probably their most popular tune, and what a perfect way to end a perfect gig. Arcade made Earl's Court their own, roll on Glastonbury and Hyde Park next.

Introducing... Dollhouse

Posted on June 7, 2014 at 4:40 PM Comments comments (0)

We spoke to Dollhouse. They're currently working on a new single, so we got ourselves an interview with the dolls.

1) Who are Dollhouse?

We are a band originating from Stroud comprising of Will, Alf, Zak, Sam and Tom.

2) Favourite gig of which you've played?

Our favourite gig was a festival in Stroud called Site Festival, we supported Sheena (https://soundcloud.com/sheena-uk), Courtly Love, and Filthy Boy (Stranger Records). The sound was incredible, it was in a huge goods shed, and the gig was followed by a thrilling drag night; in which Dollhouse all participated.

3) What can we expect in the future from Dollhouse?

We are doing lots of gigs this summer, a few festivals are on the cards like Bristol Harbourside Festival on the 20th of July, as well as a gig at The Fleece in Bristol on the 28th of June. As well as this we are playing at Stroud Fringe Festival at the end of August.

4) Who are your biggest inspirations?

We are all huge fans of the Fat White Family, Dollhouse, TOY, July, Groove Armada, The Happy Mondays, Joy Division and David Lynch.

5) Who's on your usual playlist?

At the moment we are enjoying "Who Shot Lee Oswald?" by the Fat White Family, "Mine And Yours" by The Horrors, and the album "Mezzanine" by Massive Attack because it is simply sublime.

Cheers to Dollhouse for the interview.

Fuji Rock in Japan felt like a dream!

4) Are you looking forward to the festival season?

Definitely.

5) What can we expect from Swiss Lips in the future?

An album!

It changes all the time. I like people who see things differently.

Introducing... The Shimmering Suns

Posted on June 7, 2014 at 7:05 AM Comments comments (1)

We met Mancs The Shimmering Suns and grabbed an interview with the band who are aiming to become the next indie sensation. This is what they had to say:

1) Who are The Shimmering Suns?

We're a four piece shoegaze band from Manchester, who try to add a bit more bite to the genre. We're Alex, Mike, Marty and Scott.

2) Favourite gig of which you've played?

We're actually going on tour in august for the first time. I can't tell you all the dates just yet but we're playing a really small Manchester venue with a really cool band called The Rusbies which should be a lot of fun, and doing an EP launch show at Sound Control

3) What can we expect from The Shimmering Suns in the future?

We have an EP out in August, which will be followed by as many dates as fragile bank accounts will allow. An album next year would be nice. Generally speaking though, real good vibes ~~

4) Where do you see yourselves in 5 years time?

Broke. Touring. Happy

5) Who's on your usual playlist?

The Horrors are my favourite band of all time, at least a few songs from each of their records. I love The Velvet Underground, Bowie, Slowdive, Bob Dylan, Sonic Youth and Warpaint a lot too. We took our name from a TOY song, so I better mention them too. Oh and Younghusband are really cool. There's so many, I'm discovering new music daily at the moment - it's great!

6) Biggest inspirations for The Shimmering Suns?

We all have really different influences which I find really cool. Personally I'd say The Horrors, Warpaint, TOY, Slowdive, July, that kinda thing. Scott and Alex are more into their grunge and rock n roll, whereas Mike is a fan of blues and Oasis. I think having different influences stops us sounding generic, I'm really grateful for it to be honest.

Cheers The Shimmering Suns for the interview.

RIFFED's Interview With The Rev

Posted on June 6, 2014 at 4:25 PM Comments comments (0)

We caught up with Jon McClure (A.K.A The Rev) of Reverend and The Makers and grabbed an interview with the man himself.

1) Which has been your favourite album you've produced?

Personally 'A French Kiss in the chaos' although it's not to everyone's taste but as time goes on people find that album and love it I reckon.

2) Are you looking forward to your homecoming gig? and which gig has been the favourite of your career?

In the early days we did a gig in Liverpool on e! I thought we were great at the time although we probably sounded like shit. However it was easily my favourite haha. And yeah October will be immense and it'll be nice to play songs we haven't played for a long time.

3) Can we expect more albums in the future?

Why not!! We are on the up and up of late so it's good to be alive. I still love doing this and it seems our fans still love it. Long may it continue .

4) What made you do house gigs ?

Cos I still believe in word of mouth and in the rock n roll spirit which seems to be lacking in the mainstream. It's what it's all about. Randomness and chaos should be where it's at surely?

5) Who's on your playlist ?

Liberty ship from Sheffield, Kwaito from South Africa is amazing. I'm into professor . Township electronic music . Just badarse. Get on it

Big thank you to The Rev for the interview. Great pleasure. If you'd like to purchase tickets for Reverend and The Makers' homecoming gig in October, follow the link below. Or if you'd like to purchase their latest album 'Thirty Two', also follow the link below.
